Text version · Forex: Pending Orders & Risk, lesson 3: “Sell Limit: Selling the Rally”
A sell order placed above the current price: wait for the price to rise somewhere more expensive, then sell, expecting a pullback.
Wait to sell higher
A Sell Limit sits above the current price. You think price will rally here first and then fall back, so you sell at a higher level.
If price doesn't rally
If price falls steadily and never rallies to the order price, the Sell Limit doesn't fill, and you miss this chance to go short.
Often placed near resistance
1.0880 above is resistance: price tends to stall and fall back when it rallies here, so place a Sell Limit nearby with the stop-loss above resistance.
Key takeaways
- A Sell Limit sits above the current price, often near a resistance level.
- You expect the price to rise to your order price first, then fall back.
- It's a plan to sell at a better price. If the price doesn't rally, it doesn't fill.
Try it yourself
You can do these exercises in this lesson's interactive simulation:
- Press ▶ to play the default "Rally, then fall" scenario and watch the floating P&L grow as price falls after the fill.
- Set the order price to +40 pips and play again: does price still reach it? What about +50?
- Switch to the "Breakdown" scenario: why does the Sell Limit never get a chance to fill?
- Switch to "Free drag", grab the price label and drag it up to trigger the order yourself.
Quiz and explanations

- Answer: Sell Limit 1.0880.Selling above and expecting a pullback → Sell Limit.
- 3. Your Sell Limit at 1.0880 fills, then the price falls back to 1.0830. What's the unrealized P&L on this short?
- Answer: +50 pips.The short sold at 1.0880 and the price fell to 1.0830: 1.0880 − 1.0830 = +50 pips.
